History
Records show that Calvary A.M.E. Church, Cape Coral, Florida came to be as a result of several prayer meetings. These meetings were held in the home of Rev. Dr. Charles T. Walker. Every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. over a period of four weeks, Rev. Walker and two gentlemen with him: Mr. Emmanuel B. Menager and Rev. Ronald Ackord gathered together to study the Bible and have prayer meeting in the hope of establishing a church in this second largest city in Florida.
Mr. Menager was introduced to Rev. Walker by a mutual friend, Mr. Otis Byrne, in the spring of 1992. Mr. Menager was then a licensed real estate salesman with Century 21 Sunbelt. At the request of Mr. Burns, Mr. Menager went into a quest of finding a property suitable for church use for Rev. Walker. His efforts were futile until a suite No 102 became available at the now The News Press Building on 15th Avenue. Rev. Walker promised to Mr. Menager to have him preach the first sermon at that location once the property is secured. Meanwhile, Rev. Walker contacted Rev. C. E. Jenkins, Presiding Elder for the Fort Myers District to inform him about the progress of this new church yet to be established.
In March of 1992. Rev. Walker moved into this suite to have his first service. In attendance were Charles Walker Jr., son of Rev. Walker, Mr. Menager and a family from Naples for a total of 8 people. The service went right along with songs and praise, scripture reading and finally the message presented by Mr. Emmanuel Menager. The title: "Trust God and Stand Still". Unfortunately, after several weeks of worship there with no addition to our church, Mr. Menager told Rev. Walker that the location of the church was not convenient for people to find the church located on the second floor of a mini mall. That's when the church was moved to the home of Rev. Charles Walker with a lot of prayers to follow. Having not lost faith in the Lord, Rev Walker told the Presiding Elder Rev. Jenkins that efforts were under way to officially name and establish the church.
We had borrowed the sanctuary of Iglesias Pentecostal on Pine Island Rd in order to have our first official service. Presiding Elder Jenkins officiated the first service Sunday September 26, 1993 at 3:00 p.m. The attendance was over 100 people. The church was finally established and entered into the records of the Fort Myers District of the Tampa-Florida Annual Conference of the 11th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, as "CALVARY A.M.E. CHURCH INC" The church was born.Rev Charles T Walker was appointed to be the pastor of the church since its inception 1993. He was re-appointed by Bishop Frank C Cummins every year until March 2002 when he was re-assigned to Robinson Chapel AME Church in Fort Myers Florida. Rev. Emmanuel B Menager was asked by Presiding Elder F. Bernard Lemon to fill in until Annual Conference. In October 2002 and October 2003, Bishop John Hurst Adams appointed Rev. Menager to be the pastor. In October 2004 and October 2005, Bishop McKinley Young re-appointed Rev. Menager to be the pastor at Calvary AME Church.
